Bonham Elementary has six
first grade classrooms, with a total of approximately 120 students.
Our students participate in an integrated curriculum with a hands-on
approach to learning. Theme units of study include such topics as
apples, pigs, pumpkins, penguins, ocean life, holidays around the world,
and much more.
Our students are busy every day
with a variety of literacy skills. Each day is filled with many
opportunities to read: the weekly focus poem, a shared book, and guided
reading in a small group setting. Science and Social Studies are
also incorporated into the reading program. One of the goals of the
first grade teachers is to have all their students develop a love for
reading!
Bonham first graders are also
writing, illustrating, and publishing their own books in their
classrooms. This is an exciting way for them to work together, build
their confidence, and take pride in their accomplishments.
We are excited about the reading
and writing of all of our first graders.
We are especially happy to
see our readers carry these skills over into the math and science
areas.
